Born in Townsville in the early 1980s, The Mutes were a fearless original rock band that captured the energy, humour and spirit of the era. Featuring David Steel on vocals, Dave “Fitzy” Fitzgerald on guitar, Sean on bass and Bruno Bryant on drums, the band built a loyal following through powerful live performances, original songs and unforgettable adventures across North Queensland and beyond.

From rehearsals in a mechanic’s workshop to packed pubs, regional tours and their independent 1982 cassette release Muscle Music, The Mutes carved out their own place in the Australian pub rock story—a brotherhood built on friendship, creativity and a passion for live music that continues through the stories and memories they left behind.
